David Harris is the founder and head instructor of York River Jiu Jitsu. A lifelong wrestler and martial artist, David began wrestling at a young age and quickly found that the mats became more than just a sport — they became a place of discipline, purpose, and personal growth.
After joining the United States Navy, David began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2009 at his first command as a way to continue the competitive spirit and sense of belonging that wrestling had always provided. Since then, Jiu-Jitsu has remained a major part of his life both as a student and coach.
In 2023, David earned his Brown Belt under instructor Rob Murianka at Breakaway Jiu Jitsu, marking another milestone in his martial arts journey and commitment to continued growth in the sport.
In addition to martial arts, David has served as a firefighter/paramedic with the Newport News Fire Department since 2014, where he currently serves as an instructor at the department’s training center. His experience teaching and mentoring first responders has strengthened his passion for leadership, discipline, and helping others perform under pressure both mentally and physically.
David is deeply committed to building strong programs for youth and families in the Gloucester community. For the past three years, he has coached with the Mathews Youth Wrestling Program, helping young athletes develop confidence, resilience, work ethic, and a sense of purpose through wrestling and mentorship.
Through York River Jiu Jitsu, David’s mission is to create a safe, welcoming, and positive environment where kids, families, first responders, military members, and everyday people can grow through martial arts while becoming part of a strong and supportive community.
